ACS Retreat 2024 in Herzogenaurach
On October 23, our annual retreat took place in Herzogenaurach. Extension of the ACS program in Germany
The BMBF has announced new ACS funding. Other university medical institutions in Germany can now apply and submit an initial project outline by mid-November. This is of course very motivating for us - we are excited to see which new locations and Advanced Clinician Scientists we will soon be able to welcome to the ACS circle! ACSP call-up (27.09.2024)
Welcome to our new ACS!
We warmly welcome our two new ACS, Dr. Christina Bergmann (specialist in rheumatology) and Dr. Peter Dietrich (specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterology)! Both have presented impressive scientific achievements in the selection process, and the research projects presented also fit perfectly into our program. Dr. Bergmann is researching immune-related tissue reactions in autoimmune diseases of the connective tissue using the example of systemic sclerosis. Dr. Dietrich is investigating how crosstalk between neuropeptide Y and receptor promotes the evasion of the immune system and metastatic colonization of the liver by disseminated cancer cells. Welcome to the team, we are happy about the reinforcement! (02.09.2024)
Impressive lecture by Prof. Pretorius
Last Friday, Prof. Pretorius (Stellenbosch University, South Africa) gave an impressive lecture in our “Hot Topics in Immunomedicine” seminar series on so-called microclots (amyloid-fibrinogen aggregates), which occur not only in long/post COVID and CFS/ME, but also in other inflammatory diseases. Almost 70 interested people joined the webinar from outside Erlangen and even Germany. Many thanks to Prof. Pretorius for the exciting presentation! Here is the link to the recording. (30.07.2024)
Successful defense
Last week, Laura Krumm was awarded the well-deserved title of Dr. rer. nat. after an impressive defense. In her doctoral thesis “Understanding disease modulators of SPG11-linked hereditary spastic paraplegia”, she characterized the inflammatory signatures in patients with mutations in the SPG11 gene that cause the motor neuron disease HSP (hereditary spastic paraplegia). In doing so, she also significantly advanced the ACS project of her scientific supervisor PD Dr. Martin Regensburger. Congratulations, Laura, and good luck in your future endeavors! (30.07.2024)

Female Clinician Scientist Day 2024
This year, around 30 female doctors and medical students from the higher semesters came to our Female Clinician Scientist Day to find out more about a career as a clinician scientist and funding opportunities at the site. The questions from the audience following the presentations and during the panel discussion showed once again that interest in working at the interface between medicine and research is very high! Many thanks to the speakers and the discussion panel! (28.6.2024)

ACS Peer Meeting in Würzburg
On May 2-3, 2024, the ACS of all BMBF-funded locations met in Würzburg to get to know each other and exchange scientific ideas. Under the moderation of Dr. Matthias Scholz, measures for the design of an ACS exchange platform as well as common goals were discussed and working groups formed. Successful inaugural lecture
"Caught in the NET - White blood cells at the interface between inflammation and thrombosis" was the title of the inaugural lecture by our ACS Fellow Dr. Moritz Leppkes. He vividly explained the similarities between neutrophil granulocytes and Spiderman in the fight against disruptive intruders, and how exploding cola bottles come into play. But joking aside - the research performance shown was outstanding and nothing should stand in the way of the PD now! (13.12.2023)
